Start Somewhere

The ironic thing is, I love writing. I’ve kept a journal since I was about 9 years old, I excelled in creative writing courses in high school and college, and I even find that coming up with Instagram captions can be fun.

And yet. I’ve had “write a blog post” on my work to-do list for over three years. Not a joke. When I think about why it’s taken me so long to check this off the list, I think about how overwhelming it is. Even the prompt “write a blog post” is riddled with so many follow up questions - the first one being, what do I write about?

I’ve been in the wedding industry for just about 8 years now, and I have seen all kinds of things. You’d think I would have a long list of blog post ideas like “3 things to remember on your wedding day,” “what not to wear as a wedding guest,” “how to maximize your florals for the most impact,” etc.

But the reality is, I’m overwhelmed. There are so many options, so many things I could write about, I just didn’t know where to start - so I didn’t. Even though I know how great blog posts are for SEO, even though I genuinely enjoy writing, I couldn’t get myself to sit down and start the damn thing.

Here’s where I make my analogy - you guessed it. Wedding planning can often come with a similar feeling. There are so many resources out there, Instagram and Pinterest feeding us all kinds of gorgeous images, of course it’s overwhelming. There is so much information, sometimes we don’t even know where to begin.

So here’s my advice: start somewhere. And, surprise, my honest opinion is that finding a wedding planner is a very, very smart first step. Even if you’re just looking for month-of coordination or something similar, you can (and should) still book your coordinator first, sometimes even before you book your venue. Why? Because of everything I just talked about. We’ve seen it all, we’ve experienced every kind of celebration, and we have the resources and connections to support you throughout the process.

Wedding planning is A LOT. That’s why my profession exists - to help you through the overwhelming times and the unknowns. Yes, there is a lot of noise out there about what to do, what not to do - just try to quiet that for a moment. Taking the first step can feel scary, but believe me, you’ll feel so much better once you’ve started.
